NIGERIAN NEWS : 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW THURSDAY MORNING

  1. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved N108 billion for the states to combat natural disasters. Each state is entitled to N3 billion. This is coming on the heels of massive flooding ravaging states in the North.

2. A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted N10 million bail to each of the 10 suspects arrested over the last #EndBadGovernance protest. Other conditions to be met by the 10 defendants, according to the judge, include producing one surety each in like sum, while the sureties must be residents of Abuja.

3. The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, yesterday assured stakeholders in Edo of the commission’s readiness for the Sept. 21 governorship election. Yakubu told the stakeholders in Benin to cooperate with the commission to ensure credible election.

4. The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has directed all traditional chiefs and leaders in Benin Kingdom to perform the traditional “Bisusu” ceremony to ward off evil ahead of the governorship election. The ceremony is to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free gubernatorial election in the state. This is contained in a statement by Chief Stanley Obamwonyi, the Esere of Benin on Wednesday.5. The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Wednesday, announced that 35,000 personnel would be deployed for the Edo State guber poll. Egbetokun also warned the state-owned security outfit, Edo State Security Network, to steer clear of the poll, saying the outfit had been banned.

6. An intending tenant, whose name was not known, has vanished with two children in the Igando area of Ilesa, Osun State. It was gathered on Wednesday that the tenant allegedly abducted the children, aged four and two, after cleaning her one-room apartment in a ‘face-me-and-face-you’ building around the Cele area of Igando on Saturday.

7. The Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 38-year-old man in the Karu Local Government Area of the state who committed suicide over his wife’s alleged infidelity. The deceased, identified as Gabriel Iliya Magaji, of the Masaka area in the LGA, was said to have killed himself on Monday over the situation.

8. Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has said it is wrong to jail people protesting economic hardship in the land. Afenifere spoke against the backdrop of the recent incarceration of #EndBadGovernance protesters, warning the government against descent into fascism.

9. Additional soldiers have been deployed in Moriki town, Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, as the deadline for payment of N30m levy imposed on the community by the notorious bandits’ leader, Bello Turji, has elapsed. Turji imposed a levy of N30m on the community following the killing of over 100 cows belonging to him, allegedly by the military personnel about three weeks ago.

10. The severe flooding which ravaged Maiduguri, the Borno State capital has claimed at least 30 lives, officials said on Wednesday. Hundreds of homes were flooded by the incident, which also caused significant damage to properties, including farmlands, residential areas, and business premises.
