OGUN CONDUCTS AUTOPSY ON STUDENT ‘FLOGGED TO DEATH’ BY TEACHER

The Ogun State government said an autopsy is being conducted on the body of Monday Arijo, an SSII student at Obada Grammar School, Idi-Emi, who was allegedly flogged to death by his teacher.

It was gathered that the teacher flogged Arijo 24 times and asked him to perform 162 frog jumps as a punishment for wrong doing.

In the process, the student reportedly collapsed and was rushed to different hospitals before he died allegedly due to complications from the punishment.

The government subsequently ordered the closure of the school and suspended the principal of the school, Mrs Tamrat Onaolapo, who was earlier issued a query for allowing corporal punishment to be used on the pupil against the established rules and regulations in the state.

A delegation of the government, led by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, Wednesday paid a condolence visit to the deceased’s family.

The team hinted the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, is already conducting a post-mortem on the deceased to determine the cause of his death.

Abayomi, after visiting the family of the deceased, sounded a note of warning to teachers in state-owned primary and secondary schools to desist from administering corporal punishment on pupils and students under their care.

He said “The state government has set up a committee to look into the root cause and all other circumstances surrounding what has happened because when anything occurs, the most important thing is for us to learn from a particular situation, not only about Obada Grammar School.”

Arigbabu, while assuring parents that the state government will continue to monitor and hand out sanctions to teachers who are found culpable of administering corporal punishment to students under their care.

It was gathered that the result of the autopsy would be ready on Friday.
